Seahawks second 7th round pick (#232)

Name: Greg Scruggs
Position: DE
College: Louisville
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 285
40 yard dash: 4.77

Greg Scruggs missed his final game as a college football player stemming from a poor decision made the night after earning his college degree.

That fateful night in December he chose to drive while under the influence and he crashed his vehicle into a light pole.

The Louisville Head Coach had no choice but to suspend Greg heading into the Belk Bowl.

Today Seattle Drafted Scruggs In The 7th Round

I’m trying very hard to like this pick but between the DUI (which anyone can make a mistake) and all the injury concerns I would need to be impressed by him and he just doesn’t succeed.

Pete Carroll and John Schneider saw something in him that they feel they can turn into an NFL player but I can’t figure it out. I just don’t see the need to draft for that potential when you could have gotten it after the draft. Maybe they were tired and just wanted to go home.

In interviews he says the right things but he acts very arrogant and when he becomes excited he loses all technique.

The 360

One positive thing I can say about the kid is that he has a wicked spin move.

He also has long arms that should help him fight off blocks. He will need to bulk up to play inside in the NFL and gain more strength.

Greg Scruggs

The kid has a wicked spin move.

He doesn’t have the jump off the snap or the quickness to play defensive end in my opinion.

Nicknamed the “Drummer Boy” because in high school he was a drummer and didn’t play football until his senior season, I believe on the football field they should call him “The Cleaner” because he seems to arrive at the play just after it happens so he can be in on it.

Perhaps for the first time in team history the Seahawks have drafted a member of Blue Thunder, because I don’t see this guy making the practice squad.

Expert Analysis

SI.com

Fluid, smooth defensive lineman with excellent movement skills. Plays with a good degree of quickness. Scruggs is a relatively athletic prospect with adequate size and growth potential. He displayed flashes the past three years yet has never put together a complete game. He offers a good amount of upside and can be a rotational lineman for a variety of defensive schemes if he elevates his game. Lacks bulk and strength on the inside. Does not always play with a sense of urgency. Marginal speed off the edge as a pass rusher.

In Conclusion….(Finally)

All-in-all I think the Seahawks had a pretty nice draft.

I would have liked to have seen them add a little more depth at the tight end position and maybe another receiver but instead they went heavy defense, especially defensive line.

I’m pretty happy with the way the draft turned out, minus this last pick which I believe would have been just as well spent drafting a backup punter.

I’m also hearing from “Q” that Myles Wade is coming to Seattle on a mini-camp tryout or something. Watch for him. Great story.
